On Thursday 13 June, Ms Hargraves and Mr Way supervised selected students at Blacktown Leisure Centre for an inclusive Boccia Tournament organised by the Department of Educations Sports Unit. With 470 schools entering 511 teams across the state and within an estimated 3400 competitors, the boccia tournament is thought to be the biggest of it's type anywhere in the world. The winner of each of the 25 tournaments qualifies for a place at the NSW finals in August.
Well done to our team who placed 11th on the day and had a fantastic time competing. As usual the team spirit displayed for Hazelbrook was exceptional. A massive thank you to the parents who escorted our students on the day.
The NSW public schools competition has been a springboard for students to move into the international boccia scene, with Paralympians Dan Michel, Jamieson Leeson and Spencer Cotie all beginning their boccia careers in the Schools Sport Unit event.
Dan and Jamieson went on to win three World Cup Pairs Championships and bronze at the 2021 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
We may have a future Olympian in our midst.
